Vintage and Antique Duck Decoys
Duck decoys are a true American Folk Art, created by ancient Native Americans to lure waterfowl from the sky. The oldest decoys found, so far, are canvasback decoys made from reeds and feathers which date back over years. With European colonization of the American continent early settlers learned decoy making by observing the Native techniques. Before long dozens of settlers along the Atlantic Coast had taken to carving decoys of wood, which was plentiful. In those days duck hunting and upland bird hunting was a way to stock the family larder and was not considered sport. These carvers, mostly self taught, produced a broad selection of styles, each distinct to the carver.

Setting the decoys therefore is usually done in complete darkness prior to the morning hunt.
Headlights that strap around your head or clip to the bill of your hat give off good light and keep your hands free. Some decoys with battery powered wings simulate ducks that are landing. The basic strategy in setting a decoy spread is to leave a space in front, to the left and right of your blind or shooting position for the ducks to land in.
The area should be close enough to be in effective range of shotguns. Ducks will always land into the wind so many hunters like to set up so the wind is blowing from the left or right, offering a passing shot. Many hunters will also set their blinds facing north since many newly arriving ducks will be coming from the north. Since most duck hunting is done at dawn, facing north will keep the sun out of your face. It is rare that everything works perfectly, the wind may change, the decoys may drift.
Many times hunters will rearrange their decoy spread in the middle of the hunt to adapt for changes in conditions.

Duck decoys ca. Envision a hunter crouched low amidst the tule marsh of centuries ago. The survival of his band depends on his skills as a hunter. In the early morning sky, flocks of ducks and geese fly by. His arrows cannot fly high enough into the sky to reach the flocks passing by, so he sets his best creative weapon on the water, the tule duck decoy. This is an ancient hunting tool used by his people from time immemorial.
The floating tule duck brings the flock within reach, and his people survive another day. The art of making this clever hunting tool is a tradition that has been passed down from hunter to hunter throughout the centuries. Duck skins from earlier kills were stretched over the decoys, making them very lifelike. The heads and necks of some were painted to match the colors of the duck species. In doing this, the hunter made the duck decoy appear very real, and the waterfowl would then fly into the zone within reach of his bow and arrow.
